Two months ago I bought a jeep because I’m getting rid of my WRX. The Wrx was too much to insure and I didn’t really have a love for it. So I bought something cheap to hold me over till I either find a project or buy a new car when my insurance goes down. I didn’t think I would say this but I absolutly love this jeep. It’s a 1994 Cherokee sport with 113,000 miles and no mods at all. No rust either! Anyway.. It hasn’t had a problem but on cold starts, like the first start of the day, it will crank for an extra second longer than a start when it’s already at operating temperature. I’m not sure if it could be the starter or maybe some plugs. I don’t want to buy and throw parts at it and waste money. Anyone have any idea what it could be?

Both of my I-6s jeeps loved to take all day cranking over. They still started every time, I think its just a jeep thing.

Ok, it just worried me because it's June 3rd and it still does it.

Multi-XJ owner here, as everyone else suggests, it’s normal. In general, I find these vehicles to take longer to turn over than others. If it hasn’t had a tune-up recently, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and cap and rotor are never a bad idea. Might even squeak an extra mpg if everything is well used, and by that I mean > 3 years old or more than 50k miles.

I love that it has two doors! It is very clean. Inside and out, and underneath.

My wife had one, and it took forever to start as well. I think it’s just a jeep thing. I really miss that thing too.

How on earth did you find a XJ that clean in NY? It has to be a southern car, no?

Yeah that seems to be the case, and I already know it will be hard to get rid of this thing. Thinking about giving it to my girlfriend when I get a new car. Now that I've taken it on the beach a few times it will be hard to go through a summer without it

I would test the battery first. Starters on those jeeps are pretty robust, even at 20+ years and it’s much easier to test a battery than a starter. Good lookin XJ - I had a 96 and absolutely loved it.

Yeah, I’d just keep it unless you have issues with parking or something. In that case, give it to your girl so you can still enjoy it. She got a Lexus RX330 to replace it, and it’s soul crushingly boring.

One owner from 1994-2007 (old man)
Then it was bought by someone who used it for an extra car because from 2007-2015 only 4,000 miles were put on it.
I found it at a used car dealer 8 hours after he posted it online. I looked at it that day and just knew I had to buy it.

Will do, I have a fluke meter so I could test the starter if I wanted. And they're definietly cool things, everyone who I know that had one or has, loves it.

Damn, that’s quite the score. Never had one myself, but I know people who swear by them. You can pretty much do anything to them and they'll run forever.

I haven't figured it out exactly, I think it's mid to high teens. I do mostly highway driving. I don't even factor in the time spent on the beach. That eats about $20 worth of gas right there

That’s the thing about Jeeps. Objectively, they may only be average vehicles, but they just have that mysterious X-factor that makes you love ‘em

That’s awesome but I have bad news for you.
It had a glimpse at the water, RUST IS COMING!
Haha, just kidding. I bet those 4 wheel mud flaps help with the rust too.
Great looking XJ and yeah I wouldn’t worry about starts. Especially remembering it’s an older truck with a straight 6. You have to put actual effort in to break those I-6’s.

Like everyone else said, they just take a little longer to crank. Mine does as well.
That said, it could be a sign the battery is getting old. In general, here in the Northeast, batteries last on average about 5 years. If the one in there is older than that, probably getting time for a new one. There should be a date code thing on the battery, saying when it was made.

Yamahog’s XJ cranks for a long time, but it always starts. 250,000 miles in and it still starts. I hate that thing, but Damnit do I respect it.

I’ve been putting around in a ZJ that a friend and I are trying to flip. Plus my brakes are mushy so the jeep is the highway cruiser. The 4.0 is more engine than I can ask for. I really like the ride for having solid axles. Nice xj really clean for a NY state car.
Hey, y'all, watch this!

Killer XJ!
My buddy owns 2 of them. He had the same problem and he fixed it by getting a New fuel pump. Its very possible it could be causing the slow starts.
